Only Sheep Need Apply

As if we hadn’t already sworn off crap pies from the Hut (after they tried to poison Ted with some sort of cleaning product in the pepperoni pizza — they owe me a hefty karmic debt for that emergency room visit), here’s yet another reason to despise them:
A pizza delivery driver, who police said defended himself by shooting a robber who attacked him, was fired from his job on Friday.
James Spiers, 38, confirmed to KCCI that he is no longer employed by Pizza Hut. Spiers said he was given two months severance pay and was offered help finding a new job by the company.
So they’d have preferred a funeral to having an employee defend himself while doing one of the most dangerous jobs possible? You know this is straight from the PR department.
(in the whingiest voice imaginable)
“Our customers just won’t order from us if they know our drivers carry TEH GUNZ!!”
There, I’ve given myself a headache.

This isn’t just Pizza Slut. All of the Big 3 (PH, Papa John’s, and Domino’s) have the same policy. So do most of the smaller chains. Your only option if you don’t want to support anti-gun pizza places is to go local.

The problem is, they kind of have a point. Not that I agree with the policy, but if the employment policy excludes guns, and if the employee knew that when he took the job, and if policy defines it as a firing offense, then Pizza Hut hasn’t technically done anything wrong.
I think the thinking goes like this: “If crooks know our drivers are armed, they will try to shoot our drivers to avoid getting shot. On balance, there’s less death and legal hassle if our guys don’t fight back.” I’m not saying that’s an accurate assessment, but I can see the logic.
Although, if they’re doing it out of a “Guns are bad, m’kay,” sentiment, then they’re just morons.

Bah. It’s all about corporate CYA and to heck with the people who work for you.
Those who carry despite the policy understand that their lives are worth more than a pizza and $20.

Well, a bunch of pizza guys carry and have carried back when carrying concealed meant a felony conviction. Personally, I assume that the pizza guy is carrying. The ones who did not carry were either naieve, braindead, or good enough with their hands and maglites that a firearm was just a redundant deadly force option.
When I drove I only had a couple of times that things looked like they could get dicey. Never happened, and no I actually didn’t carry, but then I was training 30+ hours a week at the local do chang.
