You’re Right, But Only if You Agree With Me

Canon Michael Ainsworth, 57, was set upon by three Asian youths shouting anti-Christian abuse when he confronted them for rowdy behaviour outside St George-in-the-East church in Shadwell, leaving him with two black eyes and cuts and bruises.
On the one hand, those “Asians” need to be acknowledged for what they really are, and deported back to “Asia,” posthaste.
On the other hand, it pleases a dark part of me that the Church is getting a taste of its own medicine.

When I hear “Asians,” I think of Japanese dudes. We either need to start calling those guys “Oriental” again, which is apparently offensive for I don’t know why, or, if we’re avoiding the “M” word, call those other guys “Middle Eastern.”
Or we can call them green and purple. I don’t care. I just want clarity.

I agree with Mycroft…Asia is a REALLY big place. Calling someone “Asian” isn’t much more descriptive than “human.” The abmiguity is almost certainly intentional.
On the note of “Oriental” — when and why did that become offensive? I thought “orient” meant “Eastern.” Oh…wait…perhaps that’s it? The very notion that they’re “Eastern” means that the world has a center that differentiates East and West, no?

I would guess that is the Home Office’s instruction to the British press. “Let’s be circumspect, boys, can’t tar all the colonials with one brush!”
How the once-mighty have fallen. We could sure use a spot of British colonialism right about now.
