Introducing…

Regular readers of the site may have noticed the box up top mentioning The Picador Project. Some of you may even have been witness to the conversation that started it all a few weeks ago. Well, we’ve been working on it since then and we believe we have, to quote someone or other, all our waterfowl aligned and are open for bidness.
To summarize:
The Picador Project was started in order to combat what many of us see as a root problem underlying the pernicious rise of the nanny-state mentality in our society. Namely, that too many people believe they are entitled to gifts from the government, coupled with a government all too willing to hand those gifts over in return for a few basic human freedoms and a monopoly on “truth.” This sort of trouble being a perennial consequence of basic human nature, utopian schemes of running off and starting over are never the ultimate solution. Thus, if we want to preserve our way of life, we have to face these troubles here at home and conquer them.
For those who slept through Civics, or truly believe we have “leaders” instead of “representatives,” we do indeed have a representative form of government, and it is our duty as citizens to instruct them when they go astray. The Picador Project exists to encourage this. We’re going to attend our city council and school board meetings (or get webcasts of them, and how cool is living in the 21st century I ask you?!), and we are going to question things that are questionable, and oppose things that are untenable.
We believe there might be politicians out there who are not self-centered, self-interested power-grabbers, and we intend to find them and encourage them just as hard as we plan to thwart their polar opposites. So think of The Picador Project as a Citizenship Support Group. We have places to report on meetings, increase our knowledge of history (he who does not learn from history is doomed to repeat it), document accomplishments, vent our frustrations, and everything else. We also have a place for those looking for more self-sufficiency, or with skills/items to barter.
The spammers are currently driving us mad, registering for new accounts, so we’re going to keep registration open only for the next 48 hours, though there will be future registration calls, or you can email (liberty-at-thelineishere-dot-org) and request a user/pass at any time. If you’re interested in joining us, please come on by and register. It is a very relaxed environment, everyone is a volunteer and provides their own self-motivation. We can and WILL take back our government.

Good idea.
However, here in Missouri, city councils are moving to reclassify concerned citizens as threats so that they can conduct their business of imposing new regulations and transferring property from citizens to development corporations unimpeded by the plebes.
Story.

So, we’ll just add that to The List. They only have as much power as we allow them to have, people. Remember: REPRESENTATIVE government.

To help keep my perspective, here are two sentements I find useful to keep in mind whenever attending a town meeting:
“Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made.” — Otto von Bismarck
“Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve.” — George Bernard Shaw
