From the California Code of Judicial Ethics (pdf):
Canon 1. A judge shall uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary.
Canon 2. A judge shall avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety in
all of the judge’s activities.
Canon 3. A judge shall perform the duties of judicial office impartially and
Canon 4. A judge shall so conduct the judge’s quasi-judicial and extrajudicial
activities as to minimize the risk of conflict with judicial obligations.
Canon 5. A judge or judicial candidate shall refrain from inappropriate political
Canon 6. Compliance with the code of judicial ethics.
And from the actual Los Angeles Superior Court:
In denying the Royal High School student delayed entry into the Marine Corps, Children’s Court Commissioner Marilyn Mackel reportedly told Sage and a recruiter that she didn’t approve of the Iraq war, didn’t trust recruiters and didn’t support the military.
“The judge said she didn’t support the Iraq war for any reason why we’re over there,” said Marine recruiter Sgt. Guillermo Medrano of the Simi Valley USMC recruiting office.
“She just said all recruiters were the same – that they ‘all tap dance and tell me what I want to hear.’ She said she didn’t want him to fight in it.”
Canon #6, Ms. Mackel, in case you skipped that one when swearing your oath, reads: A judge or judicial candidate shall refrain from inappropriate political activity. Did no one actually point out to you that included your sodding bench decisions? That maybe, just maybe, including your personal opinion in a judgement is just a bit more than the eensiest smidge unethical?
I’d loooove to know what other judgements this self-righteous cow has allowed to be colored by her own views. Might be a fun project for an LA-based Picador?
